Andre Washington

Founder & Editor-in-Chief

Andre has spent over ten years tracking manufacturer specs, aggregating owner feedback, and following the specialty food and cookware industries across both mass-market and premium tiers.

The question that kept coming up — across forums, subreddits, and comment sections — was never 'does this pan cook food?' It was always some version of: 'Is the gap between a $40 skillet and a $300 one actually real, or is it marketing?' That question is deceptively hard to answer honestly, because the answer is almost always 'it depends' — and almost nobody takes the time to explain what it depends on. That gap in editorial clarity is what FreeGourmet was built to close. Not by flattening the market into a single 'best for most people' pick, but by mapping the whole terrain so readers can locate themselves in it.

What I bring to this site is pattern recognition built from years of reading — manufacturer white papers, metallurgy explainers, professional kitchen procurement guides, aggregated owner reviews across thousands of verified purchases, and the long-form tests published by independent culinary media. I do not own or handle every product covered here. What I do is synthesize what the people who do own them consistently report, cross-referenced against published specs and the cost-per-use math that determines whether a premium purchase actually earns its price over time. That discipline keeps the analysis honest in a way that single-sample impressions cannot.

The site works like this: every guide starts from a clearly stated use case — not a vague 'best for home cooks' frame, but something specific, like 'searing proteins at high heat on an induction cooktop' or 'building a pantry foundation for French technique.' From that use case, I work outward across price tiers, naming what the entry-level option gets right, where it compromises, and exactly what additional capability or longevity the premium alternative delivers. Affiliate links to Amazon, Williams-Sonoma, Korin, Goldbelly, and specialty importers fund the operation — and the commission structure means the site earns more when readers invest in quality, which aligns our incentives correctly.

What we refuse to do is pretend that price tiers don't exist, or that every reader should default to the cheapest option that technically works. That framing quietly disrespects the reader who has already decided to invest seriously in their kitchen and just needs clear guidance on where the money actually goes. We also refuse to pad guides with filler picks chosen to hit a word count. Every product named in a FreeGourmet guide is there because it occupies a distinct, defensible position in the market — not because an affiliate program needed representation.

FreeGourmet is written for the cook who has moved past the basics and wants to understand the market at depth — someone who will spend $180 on a carbon-steel pan if the case is made clearly, but won't spend $60 on a mediocre one just because it was the first result. That reader spans a wide range: the apartment cook who just finished their first cooking course and is ready to upgrade, the weekend entertainer building a serious batterie de cuisine, and the dedicated home chef who follows the same suppliers as professional kitchens. All of them deserve the same quality of analysis. That is who every article here is written for.
